I really love interacting with children.. makes me wonder why they think and behave in certain ways.
Today an encounter with my 7-year old nephew left me thinking. We were at a restaurant just now for dinner. My sister-in-law ordered something which came in a hot plate, a sizzling hot plate. Curiosity probably caused my nephew to touch the plate and YEs! He got burnt. Well, it was just a quick touch as his reflex reacted immediately. Knowing that my nephew has a cheery nature and hardly cries, we just laughed it away by telling him to be careful the next time. He did not cry, and was apparently smiling! However, he could not stop complaining that it was painful. The waiter saw that and quickly took a medicated cream and applied it onto my nephew's finger. What happened next made me felt somewhat puzzled.
My nephew started crying. He kept complaining it was very painful but I could easily tell from his face it was all drama. The more my sis-in-law sayanged him, the louder he cried. I think he was enjoying the attention that he was receiving. He started to cry non-stop. I didn't bother until the crying got so much louder that I had to switch to my Teacher mode and shouted at him to stop crying and eat his dinner. "What do you want?!" I asked him that.
Why do children like him behave in that way? The more you sayang them, the more attention thay want. When my sis-in-law and I eventually ignored him and told him to 'go away' from our table, he stopped crying. Actually, the pain was already gone from his finger. He just wanted some care and concern from adults, since he has always been treated like a strong boy in the family, who never cries when got caned. Ha. Why huh.... Why he so like that? Ha.
